How Worried Should I Be About Luggage Theft?

You should be reasonably concerned. Auto break-ins and thefts are a significant problem on the island. The best approach is to never leave your car with any valuables in it, period. If you must leave your belongings in the car, stay within sight of the car if possible.

There are some relatively safe parking areas: any of the national parks (because thieves would have to pay to get in), any parking lots with security (Akaka Falls is one example, others would be hotel parking lots with security) and the parking areas in the Kohala resort zones.

Be sure to rent a non-conspicuous vehicle; no convertibles or Jeeps, which scream "tourist."

Last Day Woes in Hawaii.  What to do on your last day in Paradise.

When we have used Airbnbs in our last day we usually have spent it going around the island to all the little shops we wish we had bought something at picking up all the little trinkets while the rental car is full with our luggage.

We have learned over the trips though it’s best to stay at a hotel (for the last few nights and see a different area of the island) or book an extra night at our accommodation just for the late flight reason. Being that we fly to Canada most flights in the shoulder season seem to leave the Hawaiian islands around midnight

Maui -- what does everyone do during the day before red eye home?

It'd be nice to have a hotel that would let people check out at 8 pm or something like that -- for a fee of course. Just wondering how others manage when they have an 11pm flight home. How do you spend the end of the day? Does anyone book a room for the extra day just to have a place to be until late night?

Wow -- I just got off the phone with the Westin on Maui -- I was thinking about trying to book a few nights through Priceline and the Westin is one of the resorts that are popping up on Priceline. Anyways -- if you want to stay until 4pm the day of check-in, it's ONLY $100, and if you want to stay until 6 pm, it's $200. That's more than I was hoping to pay for one night!
